The following news article was posted on the Marketing magazine website today:

—

LONDON – The Conservative Party is threatening to pull advertising from Facebook over the social network’s refusal to introduce a child-safety ‘panic button’.

The party has been using the site to try to win over floating voters in the run-up to the general election. However, it is now considering withdrawing ads from the network.

Facebook has so far refused to provide a panic button on users’ profiles that would allow children to contact police instantly if they think they are being targeted by paedophiles.

It is willing to display a button on its safety and help pages, but has stopped short of introducing a graphic “panic button” widely on its site. It has offered child-protection bodies, including the NSPCC, up to one billion free ad slots on its site, which has 23 million British users.

The Conservative Party’s fan page has 23,800 members – the Labour Party and the Liberal Democrats have 7000 each.

A Green Party representative said that although it would like to see the addition of a panic button, it will continue to use the site for its campaigns.

Brands including British Airways and T-Mobile have backed Facebook’s position, saying that they will still advertise on the site.

—-

This seems like an obvious empty threat to me. Pressuring Facebook to introduce this ridiculous ‘panic button’ like this will not work. Besides, I don’t think the Conservative Partyy would want to risk losing out on the exposure they can gain from online social networking.

The following is an excerpt from an article posted last week on Yahoo! UK’s political blog Don’t Panic:
—

Labour shot themselves in the foot with a David-Cameron-as-Gene-Hunt-from-Ashes-to-Ashes poster (below).

Why did no-one at Labour HQ think, “Wait a minute, that actually makes Dave look cool”? The Tories quickly released their own version mocking Labour’s incompetence (below).

The fly-weight propaganda bout leads us to ask two questions: why are political parties so useless at advertising? And if they are so hopeless at organising a few posters, how can we trust them to run a whole country?

Ed and David Miliband were the ‘brains’ behind the Ashes to Ashes poster, picking it as the winner from a Labour design competition. Ed and David are the sons of Marxist academic Ralph and they both gained first class degrees in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford, before going to study even more politics at Harvard. Perfect preparation for a quick stint as a political analyst at a think tank before being fast-tracked to the centre of government. David is married to a concert violinist and Ed’s partner is a barrister. You just can’t see them sat in watching Ashes to Ashes with a pizza, and it’s this lack of any connection to the real world that makes it difficult for some politicians to communicate with people like us, who live in it.

Like the Milibands, David Cameron boarded the express train straight to front bench politics, by way of Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford, but unlike them he travelled in the Eton carriage (ensuring he didn’t have to sit next to any plebs.) He has even less experience of real life. People from Eton are so posh that they call people from other famous private schools, like St Paul’s, “oiks.” Ask Gideon Osborne (or George as he now calls himself), as it’s how he was abused by other members of the exclusive Bullingdon Club at Oxford University (Dave, Boris Johnson and Nat Rothschild were also members, see image top left of page). If he’s an “oik” despite being an aristocrat and having an £8 million trust fund, what does that make the rest of us?

—-

Hilarious stuff. All these criticisms of both the Labour and Conservatives is probably working in the favour of the Liberal Democrats, although we may eventually see the Lib Dems make a gaffe with their advertising.

The following news article was posted on the Total Film website yesterday:

—

24 star Kiefer Sutherland today exclusively told Total Film that the TV show’s conclusion at the end of series 8 has indeed paved the way for the long-awaited 24 movies. (Yes, plural).

According to Kiefer, the first film is already scripted and will take place outside of America.

Although he was understandably tight-lipped on the plot details, Keifer confirmed that the first film is already scripted and is “not going to take place in America”.

He also admitted there will be major structural changes to the TV series.

“The film will be a two-hour representation of a 24-hour day,” he said, “so all of a sudden, the restrictions of the real-time aspect are lifted. Which is huge.

“To put it in context, in the series, every crisis had to come to us, because we couldn’t move. Who wants to see Jack Bauer sit on a plane for four hours?

“But in the format of the film, it will be very feasible to go from Eastern Europe to London in the space of 24 hours, so all of a sudden there is so much more latitude. The skies have opened up!”

—

As a fan of the show, I’m glad it’s not the end of the road for Jack Bauer. Although the premise of the show is the 24 hour time frame, I thought it would have been a good idea to show a story that unfolds over the course of a few days instead. Of course it would no longer fit the ‘24‘ format but it would allow the team behind the show to cover more areas in a longer time frame.

I could have watched 24 all the way through series 15 and now that the character of Jack Bauer is continuing into the film format, I would like to see the character immortalised in literary form and have many more stories unfold in the future, a lot like Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.

According to Deadline Hollywood, the show, described as a “game with no rules”, has been called a cross between shows Survivor, The Mole and The Amazing Race.

The show marks Bay’s first foray into unscripted TV and will see contestants compete against each other in extreme conditions in hostile environments. Bay has said that the action-adventure show, produced with company Magical Elves, will “remain true to the filmmaker’s signature style”.

“For my first television project I wanted to do something that had never been done before, and I believe that One Way Out,” said Bay. “Combining unique twists, death-defying challenges, and stunning visuals, we are reinventing the genre, showing just how far people will go when they are stripped of their bare necessities and forced to do whatever it takes to survive.”

Bay and the production company are pitching the concept to US TV networks.

—-

Michael Bay is currently considerered by many to be the worst director in Hollywood. I don’t think that’s true. Sure, the Transformers movies are absolutely crap but Bay knows how to make entertaining viewing. There are too many reality shows on TV right now and they’re beginning to resemble each other. I doubt One Way Out will be a “game with no rules” but it would be interesting to see what Bay comes up with. Even if it’s worse than his last few movies…

A small business group has criticised adverts for Coca-Cola’s Glaceau Vitamin Water brand, because they appeared to condone being off work without reason.

Text in an ad stated: “If you’ve had to use sick days because you’ve actually been sick, then you’re seriously missing out….The trick is to stay perky and use sick days to just, not go in.”

The Forum of Private Business ctriticised the ad saying it was “unacceptable to encourage workers to throw ’sickies’ in order to sell a soft drink. A company of the standing of Coca-Cola should know better.”

Coca-Cola rebutted the complaint saying the ad was in no way meant as a serious recommendation adding it was “clearly a tongue in cheek reference” and “one of a series of fictional stories” on the bottle which “help demonstrate the brand’s personality – we are not seriously suggesting people should call in sick when they are not“.

—-

Funny stuff.

Not the first time the vitamin water brand have been criticised by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA). Last year the company was slammed for presenting misleading claims about nutritional benefits. Coca Cola argued that the advertising was “humorous and irreverent”, which is what they seem to hinting at this time in order to justify the advertising.

The following is an excerpt of a news article posted on the Guardian website today:

—

Twitter to let advertisers pay for tweets to appear in search results

The 140-character social networking site Twitter has found a business model: “promoted tweets” written by advertisers, which will appear when people search on the site.

The system echoes that used to huge success by Google, which serves adverts against search results.

Twitter says it has already signed up a number of well-known organisations, including the coffee chain Starbucks, film-maker Sony Pictures, caffeine drink Red Bull, TV channel Bravo, the Virgin America airline and the US retailer Best Buy.

Users will see sponsored tweets at the top of some Twitter search pages, which will be an ordinary tweet from the brand clearly labelled “Promoted” to distinguish paid-for tweets from normal ones.

Later on, adverts will also begin appearing on the site’s home page when users visit it which will be tailored to the user’s interests, determined by the messages they publish and receive. They will also appear in the tweets that are sent to users when accessed through other applications – which makes up anything between 60% and 80% of access to Twitter.

—-

Elsewhere on the Guardian website, Twitter’s users have responded to the plans:

“Ads on site fine, in API feeds, no thanks. I don’t block browser ads, but I’d write a Twitter ad blocking client if it happens” – Lesley Harrison

“Promoted tweets will protect Twitter from being sold off, covered in ads and bled dry like MySpace.” – Chris Beach

“Don’t mind idea of targeted promoted tweets. Would prob check some out. Inevitable Twitter must make money” – Mark Jones

“Like FB [Facebook], it shouldn’t bother mainstream users (the majority audience?) but early adopters / techies may flee obtrusive ads.” – Philip Turpin

“OK but if Biz [Stone, CEO of Twitter] starts displaying promoted tweets in my Tweetstream, I’d say ‘Oi! @biz! No! Shove your ads up your cyberspace’” – TV Pixie

“Searches on Twitter tend to return junk. Now it’ll be paid junk. Not much difference to me!” – Darcy Kiernan

“Sensible – clearly they need revenue & they’ve gone for least contentious first. Hope paid accs to avoid ads will follow…” – Katy Bairstow

“Explains why they need official Twitter clients. The unofficial ones will just start offering adblocking.” – Tanya Peasgood

“Twitter has to earn, but I doubt an ad-tweet would make me click through. Let’s see how creative the advertisers can be ” – Peter Sigrist

“I think only time will tell if ppl click but I think it defeats the purpose. If I want the content, I’ll just follow the brand” – David Teicher

“I believe it was inevitable. Twitter like most other free services have to make money as well. I like it free so ads are ok” – Trevor A

“Would rather see ads than pay, but they need to go slow + make it clear what’s ads and what’s not” – Sophie Dennis

“The ad strategy is the first step into making any free service a payed one IMO. Then go for a subscription service ala Spotify” – Brad

“Hate the idea of ‘promoted tweets’ defeats the purpose doesn’t it?” – Finbar Film

“Don’t see it as a problem. Ads already on ubertwitter. I’d rather scan a sponsored tweet than pay for the service.” – Carina Volkes

“As long as they are properly tagged ‘promoted’ I’ll just filter them out. If not, it will spell the end of twitter I feel.” – Jonathan Ellis

Below is an excerpt of a news article posted on the Empire website earlier this week:

—

Vampire horror tale Fright Night might just have locked down one of its leads – as Star Trek’s Anton Yelchin is negotiating to play Charley Brewster.

Tom Holland’s 1985 original saw William Ragsdale as Charley, a horror-obsessed teenager who discovers that a vampire named Jerry (Chris Sarandon) has moved into the house next door. But despite his knowledge of vampire lore from the movies, Charley needs a little help when it comes to fighting off the charming undead bastard.

Craig Gillespie is directing the new version for DreamWorks, and Buffy TV veteran Martin Noxon has written the script. There’s no word on when it’ll shoot yet, but we’ve got to admit that Yelchin is a pretty solid choice for Charley. Now they really need a great Jerry and – assuming the film still has the character, someone who can pull off horror host Peter Vincent, played so memorably by Roddy McDowell in the original.

—

Last summer The Daily Media Blog reported out how a bunch of classic movies from the 1980′s are being remade. You can now add this to the list. The original was a great film that spawned a sequel. It’ll be interested to see how the remake turns out.

Check out the trailer of the original Fright Night movie:

The following news article was posted on the Marketing website today:

—
LONDON – Ryanair is set to introduce a £1 charge for consumers wanting to use the toilet on its flights.

The system is likely to involve a coin-operated door release, which customers would use on its short-haul flights. The plan is to charge passengers £1 or €1 to use the toilet.

Although a Ryanair spokeswoman denied the change was officially going ahead, she confirmed the budget carrier is in discussions with aircraft manufacturer Boeing about its implementation.

As part of the cost-cutting changes, first mooted last summer, Ryanair would reduce the number of toilets from three to one, and introduce a further six seats. Ryanair spokesman Stephen McNamara said the airline hopes to encourage passengers to use the toilet before and after flights.

Separately, Ryanair has confirmed plans to increase check-in baggage charges from £15 to £20 over the summer months, as it looks to drive up revenues. From 1 September, the charges will go back to £15.

McNamara added: “Ryanair is determined to incentivise passengers to travel light this summer, by increasing our checked-in baggage fees for the months of July and August only. Over 70% of all Ryanair passengers will be unaffected by these changes, because they travel with no checked-in bags.”

—-

I was going to say a few words about this but the comments left at the bottom of the article sum it up:

Chris Arnold – 07 April 2010

I think Ryanair will be a dead brand very soon. They do everything possible to anger users. They only survive because of cheap prices and expect the public to put up with being treated like cattle. I will never fly them again after two incidents, one of which was dishonest and possible illegal. I actually think they are a dishonest company. When I fly to Spain I pay a few extra quid to fly BA or Iberia to be able to take a bigger bag, get treated with respect and not be delayed. And not to have my bags lost. Not to be treated like garbage. Not to suffer rude staff. Not to seat in a coach with wings. Not to end up paying as much in extras.
